Google introduces the Pixel Watch

At its annual developer conference, Google unveiled its first smartwatch.

The Google Pixel Watch combines Google’s Wear operating system with Fitbit’s health tracking technology.

Fitbit was purchased by Google in 2019 for $2.1 billion (£1.7 billion).

The watch can only be paired with Android devices and is 4G-compatible, which means it can function without being near a phone – but it does require its own data plan to do so.

According to Google, both the phone and the watch would need to be connected to the same network.

The tech behemoth did not disclose a price for the wearable, but stated that it will be a “premium product” when it launches in the autumn.
It will face stiff competition from Apple and Samsung, both of which are already market leaders in smartwatches.

There are already numerous third-party Android watches that run Google’s Wear operating system, but Google has yet to release its own device.

According to Rick Osterloh, Google’s senior vice president of devices and services, the product’s uniqueness stems from the combination of “Google’s ecosystem and Fitbit expertise.”

Despite rumours that the Pixel Watch would be compatible with Apple products, Google has confirmed that this will not be the case.
Google’s initial takeover of Fitbit was probed by the European Commission, which eventually gave its approval.
However, Google had to make a number of promises, including not to “degrade the user experience of third-party smartwatches when paired with an Android phone” for a period of 10 years, in Europe.
It also had to pledge not to use Fitbit data for advertising purposes.
