Tanker Capsizes Off Philippines: One Crew Member Missing, Efforts Underway to Contain Oil Spill
On Thursday, a serious maritime incident unfolded off the coast of the Philippines when the marine tanker MT Terra Nova sank amid rough seas, causing a substantial oil spill and prompting a rescue mission for one missing crew member. The vessel, which was transporting 1,494 metric tonnes of industrial fuel, capsized near the coastal town of Limay in Bataan province. According to Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista, 16 of the 17 crew members have been rescued, while a search is still ongoing for the missing sailor.
The incident occurred as the tanker faced adverse weather conditions, including strong winds and high waves, which played a crucial role in its sinking. The Philippine Coast Guard has mobilized a 97-meter vessel to assist with the search and response efforts. However, the response has been hampered by the severe weather, which has prevented the immediate deployment of smaller vessels that are crucial for containing the spill.
An aerial survey conducted by the Coast Guard revealed an oil slick stretching approximately two nautical miles from the site of the sinking. The slick is being driven by strong waves, raising concerns about its potential to spread further, possibly reaching Manila, the capital city. The proximity of the spill to such a major urban area underscores the gravity of the situation and the urgency of containment efforts. “We are racing against time,” said Armando Balilo, a spokesperson for the Coast Guard. “We will do our best to contain the fuel.”
In response to the unfolding crisis, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has directed the environment ministry to conduct an immediate assessment of the environmental impact. The head of the environment ministry is currently en route to Limay to oversee the situation on the ground. The government is also investigating whether the sinking of the MT Terra Nova is connected to Typhoon Gaemi, which has been wreaking havoc across the region. The typhoon has caused severe flooding in Manila and surrounding areas, resulting in at least 14 fatalities and potentially worsening the overall disaster response.
The MT Terra Nova has a deadweight tonnage of 1,415 tonnes and was en route to Iloilo province in the central Philippines at the time of the accident. This incident is reminiscent of a similar oil spill last year involving the MT Princess Empress, which sank with approximately 800,000 liters of industrial fuel. That spill took three months to clean up and had a significant impact on local tourist towns.
The current response efforts are focused on mitigating the environmental damage from the spill and locating the missing crew member. The Coast Guard and other agencies are working under challenging conditions to address the spill and prevent it from causing further harm. The situation remains fluid, with ongoing developments as the search and containment operations continue.
