Go Behind the Curtain: The Making of Stranger Things: The First Shadow

Are you ready to step into the Upside Down like never before? Netflix is bringing fans an exclusive look at the making of Stranger Things: The First Shadow in a brand-new documentary, Behind the Curtain: Stranger Things: The First Shadow. This behind-the-scenes special is set to premiere on April 15, giving audiences a rare glimpse into the creation of the hit West End play before it makes its way to Broadway.

A Peek Behind the Scenes of Stranger Things on Stage

The Stranger Things universe has captivated millions worldwide, and now, it's taking the stage in an all-new way. Behind the Curtain follows the talented cast and crew as they prepare for the play’s grand debut at London’s Phoenix Theatre on December 14, 2023. The documentary captures the excitement, hard work, and magic behind transforming the beloved Netflix series into a theatrical masterpiece.

Co-creators Ross and Matt Duffer were blown away by the production. “The first time we saw the play, we were amazed,” says Ross Duffer. Matt Duffer adds, “They pulled everything off and then some. It was one of the most thrilling experiences of our lives.”

The Challenge of Bringing Hawkins to the Stage

Creating Stranger Things: The First Shadow was no small feat. The stage adaptation had to capture the mystery, suspense, and supernatural thrills that made the original series a global phenomenon. Director Stephen Daldry, a Tony Award-winning visionary, aimed to create an immersive experience for audiences.

“The challenge is to create a visceral experience where the audience feels shock and awe, surprise and delight,” Daldry explains. “You have to deliver that. There are moments in the show where you will think, ‘I don’t understand how they did that.’”

The Story Behind The First Shadow

What is Stranger Things: The First Shadow all about? The play takes fans back to Hawkins in 1959—long before Eleven and the gang faced the horrors of the Upside Down. The story follows young Jim Hopper, Bob Newby, and Joyce Maldonado as they navigate everyday high school life. But when a new student, Henry Creel, arrives in town, things take a dark turn. His family struggles with a fresh start, and the past begins to reveal sinister secrets.

The play explores Henry Creel’s origins in greater depth than ever before, connecting directly to the upcoming Stranger Things Season 5. Ross Duffer explains, “While Season 5 explores Henry’s backstory, the play provides a much deeper understanding of who he was—and how and why he became Vecna.”

A Star-Studded Cast Reprising Their Roles

Fans of the West End production will be thrilled to know that Louis McCartney will reprise his role as Henry Creel when Stranger Things: The First Shadow arrives on Broadway in Spring 2025. McCartney’s performance in the London production earned him the 2024 Stage Debut Award for Best Performer in a Play and the Critics’ Circle Theatre Award for Most Promising Newcomer.

The play is set to premiere at the Marquis Theatre in New York, with previews beginning on March 28, 2025, and an official opening on April 22, 2025. Tickets are on sale now at StrangerThingsBroadway.com.
