In a stunning display of batting prowess, David Warner dominated the first day of the Test series against Pakistan in Perth, putting Australia in control with a magnificent score of 164. Warner’s exceptional performance on the pitch propelled him to the fifth spot on Australia’s all-time Test run-scorers list, surpassing the likes of Matthew Hayden and Michael Clarke.

Australia, opting to bat after winning the toss, asserted their dominance from the outset, with Warner and Usman Khawaja forming a formidable opening stand of 126. Khawaja’s departure for 41, courtesy of Shaheen Shah Afridi, marked a breakthrough for Pakistan shortly after lunch.

Khawaja, wearing a black armband, was barred from making an on-field statement in support of Palestinians. He had intended to wear shoes with the messages “all lives are equal” and “freedom is a human right.”

Warner’s 26th Test century was a masterclass, reaching the milestone off 125 balls and eventually amassing 164 runs. Despite Pakistan’s success in dismissing Marnus Labuschagne (16) and Steve Smith (31), Warner’s resilience and skill dominated the day’s play.

Travis Head, the newly appointed co-vice-captain of Australia’s Test side, contributed crucial runs alongside Warner before being caught on 40 by Pakistan debutant Aamer Jamal.

Aamer Jamal’s short-ball strategy paid off towards the end of the day, bringing an end to Warner’s innings as he was caught by Imam ul-Haq. Warner now stands at 8,651 career Test runs, surpassing Australian greats Michael Clarke (8,643) and Matthew Hayden (8,625).

Australia’s captain, Pat Cummins, expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, acknowledging Warner’s exceptional contribution. Cummins remarked on ABC Grandstand, “You never write off a great player like Davey… He’s a champion, and I’m really happy for him. With five wickets in hand, we’d love another 100 or 150 runs.”

As the Test series unfolds, Warner’s stellar innings has set a formidable tone for Australia, leaving fans eagerly anticipating the continuation of this high-stakes cricket battle.
