The 2024 USATF Indoor Championship held in Albuquerque witnessed a remarkable comeback from an Olympian in the men’s high jump category. After a period of intense training and dedication following his appearance at the Tokyo Olympics, the 27-year-old athlete showcased his talent and determination by securing victory at the national indoor championship.

Shelby McEwen delivered an exceptional performance on February 16, surpassing Vernon Turner to claim a thrilling come-from-behind victory. With a final jump of 2.28m, McEwen outclassed Vernon’s 2.25m effort to capture the gold medal at the USATF Indoor Championship.

This triumph marks McEwen’s second consecutive victory at the USATF Indoor Championship, as he successfully defended his title from 2023. Notably, his achievement at the 2024 Dr. Sander Invitational Columbia Challenge in January, where he also recorded a 2.28m jump, had positioned him as a world leader in the high jump category at the time.

In a post-event interview with Armory Track, the Nike-sponsored athlete expressed his gratitude and credited his success to hard work and dedication. McEwen acknowledged the support of his coach and highlighted the importance of trusting the process and focusing on one meet at a time.

Reflecting on his journey, McEwen remained resilient despite facing challenges at the Tokyo Olympics, where he finished 12th. However, he remained undeterred and continued to strive for improvement. He emphasized the significance of paying attention to small yet crucial details to enhance his performance.

McEwen’s victory serves as a testament to his perseverance and commitment to excellence. As he looks ahead to the remainder of the season, the American athlete is poised to make further strides in his career, fueled by his determination to succeed on the global stage.
