Tiger Woods, the iconic golfer whose triumphant return to the sport has been closely watched by fans worldwide, faced a setback in his journey to recovery as he withdrew from the Genesis Invitational in Pacific Palisades, California, on February 16th, citing illness as the reason for his departure.

The tournament, hosted by Woods at the Riviera Country Club, witnessed his unexpected exit during the second round, as he left the course on a golf cart. PGA official Mark Dusbabek confirmed on the Golf Channel that Woods’ departure was attributed to an illness.

According to a statement from Woods’ manager, Rob McNamara, shared by Dan Rapaport of Barstool Sports, Woods began experiencing “flu-like symptoms” and dehydration after the round on February 15th. McNamara explained that Woods developed a fever and felt dizzy while walking and playing, prompting his withdrawal from the tournament. However, McNamara reassured fans that Woods was responding well to treatment with an IV bag and was expected to be released soon.

Contrary to speculation, McNamara clarified that Woods’ ailment was not a physical injury, emphasizing that his back, which has been a concern in the past, was in good condition.

Woods’ presence at the Genesis Invitational was eagerly anticipated, especially after his remarkable comeback to the sport following a hiatus in 2021 due to leg and ankle surgery resulting from a car crash in Los Angeles. Despite facing adversity, Woods returned to competitive golf and participated in the PNC Championship at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Orlando, Florida, in December 2023. Partnering with his son Charlie, Woods expressed gratitude for the opportunity to share the experience with his family, highlighting the significance of these moments amid the challenges of the past years.

While Woods’ withdrawal from the Genesis Invitational may have disappointed fans hoping to witness his stellar performance on the green, his dedication to recovery and well-being remains a priority. As the golfing legend navigates this temporary setback, the golfing community stands united in wishing him a swift recovery and a speedy return to the sport he has so passionately embraced throughout his illustrious career.
