The Season 7 premiere of ABC’s medical drama “The Good Doctor” saw the departure of Hill Harper’s character, Dr. Marcus Andrews, addressed following his resignation as president in the Season 6 finale.

Harper had been a main cast member since the show’s inception in 2017, portraying the pivotal role of Dr. Andrews. However, the setup for his departure was established in the previous season’s finale.

In the premiere episode of the final season, Dr. Andrews’ whereabouts were mentioned in a conversation between Nurse Dalisay Villanueva, played by Elfina Luk, and Dr. Audrey Lim, portrayed by Christina Chang. Villanueva informed Dr. Lim that Dr. Andrews was in Spain, contradicting Dr. Lim’s assumption that he was at a meditation retreat in Vietnam. Villanueva further elaborated that Dr. Andrews was now walking the Camino de Santiago.

The departure of Harper’s character marks a significant change for the show, as he was one of the original series regulars alongside Freddie Highmore (Dr. Shaun Murphy) and Richard Schiff (Dr. Aaron Glassman). Chuku Modu, who played Dr. Jared Kalu in the first two seasons before recurring in Season 6, returned as a main cast member for the final season.

Outside of his role on “The Good Doctor,” Harper made headlines last year when he announced his candidacy for a U.S. Senate seat in Michigan. In his announcement, Harper emphasized the need for governmental representation that prioritizes the interests of the people and protects their freedoms.
