After securing their first win in a calendar month, Purdue women’s basketball prepares to face a familiar opponent.

On Sunday, Purdue (10-12, 3-8 Big Ten) will visit Assembly Hall to take on the No. 14 ranked Indiana (19-3, 10-2) for their second matchup of the season and the first on Hoosier territory. The Boilermakers likely seek redemption after their January clash, which ended in a 74-68 defeat. Despite holding a 7-point lead at the end of the first quarter and a 3-point lead heading into the fourth, Purdue struggled to contain Indiana’s sharpshooting, allowing 15 3-pointers. Head coach Katie Gearlds acknowledged the controllable nature of these defensive lapses.

“They made 15, but I think seven of them were pretty controllable for us. The first quarter they hit two threes where we were supposed to be in our press, we didn’t get matched up in our press,” Gearlds said. “Things are gonna happen, but it’s controllable things that I think we can do a better job of.”

Despite the absence of Hoosier senior guard Sydney Parrish due to a foot injury, Purdue faces a formidable IU squad, albeit without the boisterous support of a Mackey crowd.

In addition to contending with a top-15-ranked rival, Purdue faces the daunting task of playing at Assembly Hall, where Indiana remains undefeated in home games this season, boasting a 12-0 record. Senior forward Mackenzie Holmes has played a significant role in Indiana’s success, earning praise from Purdue guard Abbey Ellis as “the best big in college basketball.”

“She’s unstoppable, so defensively that’s something we’re going to have to hone in on,” Ellis remarked ahead of their initial matchup with the Hoosiers. “They’re all very skilled fundamentally, shooting wise they all have great potential from 3, and defensively they all work together. They’re a sound team.”

Fans can catch the action on Big Ten Network, with tip-off scheduled for Sunday at 2 PM.
