In a meeting with President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola, President of the Estonian Parliament Lauri Hussar emphasized the importance of supporting Ukraine amidst ongoing discussions within the European Union. Despite potential differences among member states, Hussar stressed the necessity of standing in solidarity with Ukraine, citing its significance for the future of the EU.

“Ukraine must be able to rely on Europe,” stated Hussar, highlighting the crucial role of support in mitigating the overall impact of the conflict on Ukraine and its allies. He underscored the importance of maintaining pressure on Russia without offering any respite. Metsola echoed these sentiments, affirming the European Parliament’s unwavering support for Ukraine.

The discussions also addressed the possibility of utilizing Russia’s frozen assets to aid in the reconstruction efforts and compensate for damages inflicted on Ukraine.

Looking ahead to the European Parliament elections scheduled for June, both Hussar and Metsola expressed hope for increased engagement and public interest. Recognizing the benefits of EU membership, Hussar emphasized Estonia’s commitment to European values and its efforts to bolster the EU’s global presence.

“We must acknowledge the European Union as the most significant development of the past 70 years,” stated Hussar. “Estonia remains steadfast in upholding European values and advocating for the EU’s visibility and influence on the international stage.”

Deputy Chair of the EU Affairs Committee of the Estonian Parliament, Enn Eesmaa, also participated in the meeting, further underscoring Estonia’s engagement in EU affairs. Metsola concluded her visit to Estonia by meeting with Estonian President Alar Karis, Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, and engaging with young people at Tallinn University.

As discussions continue within the EU regarding Ukraine and broader geopolitical challenges, Estonia reaffirms its commitment to solidarity and cooperation within the European community.
