Although Bulls coach Billy Donovan emphasized that it was LaVine’s decision to undergo surgery, he also acknowledged that the star guard had attempted to rehab his foot and return to the court. LaVine had been sidelined since spraining his right ankle on January 18, with the sprain reportedly healed. However, additional discomfort in his foot has kept him out of action, a recurring issue that previously forced him to miss 17 games earlier in the season.
Despite initial expectations for LaVine to be re-evaluated after another week, the decision for surgery indicates the severity of his condition. Donovan expressed frustration over LaVine’s inability to play at his best due to discomfort in his foot.
LaVine’s 2023-24 season ends prematurely after just 25 games, during which he averaged 19.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.9 assists. This marks the third time in the past four seasons that LaVine has missed significant playing time due to injury.
The injury comes at a critical juncture for the Bulls, who are currently in ninth place in the Eastern Conference standings. Donovan acknowledged the impact of losing a player of LaVine’s caliber but indicated that the team would have to adapt and continue without him.
