Sha’Carri Richardson Arrested at Seattle Airport Amid Assault Allegations

On the evening of July 27, 2025, Olympic sprint champion Sha’Carri Richardson, 25, was arrested at Seattle–Tacoma International Airport and booked into the South Correctional Entity in Des Moines, Washington. She faces a charge of fourth-degree domestic violence assault following a confrontation with her boyfriend, fellow sprinter Christian Coleman. Despite the incident, Coleman declined to press charges.

What the Police Say

A Transportation Security Administration supervisor alerted authorities after witnessing the incident at a TSA security checkpoint. Surveillance footage reportedly shows Richardson yanking Coleman’s backpack and pushing him repeatedly, one shove sending him into a pillar. She is also accused of throwing a pair of headphones at him. Coleman, who has been with Richardson for over two years, reportedly told investigators he did not wish to continue as a victim in the case.

Detention and Championship Withdrawal

Richardson was held for roughly 19 hours before her release on July 28. In the days following, she competed in the preliminary round of the women’s 100-meter race at the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon, advancing with an 11.07-second time. However, she later withdrew from the semifinals and opted not to participate in the 200-meter event.

Racing Credentials and Future Implications

Richardson is not only the reigning 100-meter world champion (Budapest 2023), but also earned a silver medal in the 100m and a gold in the relay at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Under World Championship rules, she already has an automatic berth for the 2025 championships in Tokyo.

Official Responses and Broader Context

USA Track & Field issued a brief statement confirming their awareness of the incident but declined further comment. Richardson’s agent and law enforcement have not provided additional updates.

The arrest adds a complex chapter to Richardson's public life. She previously faced suspension after a positive cannabis test at the 2021 U.S. Olympic trials, a setback she addressed publicly.
