In our lifetime, we humans develop several habits. Some of them are good and some of them are bad. These habits can be anything from daily brushing your teeth to smoking several cigarettes a day. Since, we have the ability to distinguish our habits as useful or detrimental, we usually attempt to mold them as per needs.
How fast can we get let go of our habits?
There are several apps in the market that cause you to pickup a particular habit. Most of them are based on the theory that 21 days are needed to develop any habit. This number comes from a broadly famous 1960 book called Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz. He was a plastic specialist who saw his patients appeared to require around 21 days to become accustomed to their new faces. But as per a study from the year 2009, the time it takes to shape a habit truly isn’t excessively obvious.
Analysts from University College London performed a study on 96 people where they observed their newly developed habits for about 12 weeks. They discovered that an average of 66 days is actually required to develop a new habit and the period varied in the test subjects from 18-254 days. But do we have any idea how many do we require to get rid of a habit? It seems that developing and getting rid of a habit have a real tight connection. Psychologist Timothy Pychyl stated, “Getting rid of a habit truly implies building up another habit, another pre-powerful reaction. The old habit or example of reacting is still there (an example of neuron reactions in the cerebrum), however it is less predominant (less strong).”
Experts have the opinion that there’s no established duration for getting rid of a habit. Only proper motivation, strong personality, scenario and the habit in question can be of any assistance in the process. A replacement behavior is most probably the best option you have.
