Scary Movie Is Back: Anna Faris, Regina Hall, & the Wayans Reunite

Iconic horror spoof franchise Scary Movie is getting a major reboot—with original stars Anna Faris and Regina Hall stepping back into their roles as Cindy and Brenda. It’s a full-circle moment: the Wayans brothers—Keenen Ivory, Shawn, and Marlon—are returning too, teaming up again for the first time in 18 years to write a brand-new script. The sixth installment is helmed by director Michael Tiddes and also features Rick Alvarez as co-writer and producer. Mark your calendars: it’s set to land in theaters on June 12, 2026.

Nostalgia Meets Fresh Laughs

The original Scary Movie, released in 2000, became a cultural phenomenon, grossing $278 million on a $19 million budget. Parodies spanned Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, The Sixth Sense, among others. Faris and Hall anchored the first four films, creating comedic chemistry fans still talk about. The fifth film, however, didn’t include them—or the Wayans—and failed to capture that same spark. Now, with the creative team reunited, expectations are high for a comedic return to form.

Who’s on Board

Anna Faris and Regina Hall officially confirmed their involvement in a joint statement, expressing excitement to work again with the Wayans brothers “—three men we’d literally die for (in Brenda’s case, again).” This level of nostalgic affection speaks volumes about the camaraderie at play.

Behind the scenes, Keenen Ivory Wayans is back in a producing role, and Michael Tiddes will direct. Fans also have Neal H. Moritz producing and Paramount distributing under Miramax’s financing. Faris noted she would only return if Hall did too, reinforcing how much their dynamic mattered in reviving the series.

What’s Ahead for the Franchise

While plot details are still under wraps, industry insiders suggest the film may lampoon modern, prestige horror—think Hereditary, Midsommar, and The Babadook. That would bring a contemporary edge to the franchise’s signature, slapstick parody style. Production is expected to kick off later this year.

Why This Matters Now

This reboot arrives amid a broader trend of successful horror reboots—legacy sequels like I Know What You Did Last Summer are earning praise for balancing respect for the originals with modern updates. Scary Movie 6 taps nostalgia while promising a fresh, self-aware comedic bite for today’s audiences.
