California: Scammers coerced an elderly man out of $25K by threatening to kidnap his son, using AI voice technology that made it sound like a person was saying his son had been in a 'horrible accident'.

From California, United States, comes a mind-boggling case that brings to the fore the threat of new technology with con artists extracting $25,000 from a 90-year-old man through high-tech artificial intelligence voice technology, making him believe it was his son on the other end of the line. The scammers told the man that his son had been in a "horrific accident" and was arrested and needed bail money right away.

A witness, whose identity is yet to be made public, claimed to police that his son called him on the phone and sounded frantic. According to him now, he believes that his son was indeed calling, but through AI technology, the voice was so perfect that he thought they were talking to each other. "It was absolutely his voice," said this man of emotion while undergoing the ordeal.

During the hoax call, fraudsters created a fabricated story of a serious car accident for which police were demanding a very high amount to be paid for the release of the person involved in it. The old man trusted what he thought was his son's plea for help, wired the money requested by fraudsters, believing that he was doing the right thing to support his family.

After getting a call throughout the entire deal, the man called his son and was shocked to find him perfectly all right and not involved in an accident. He realized immediately that he had been the victim of a very sophisticated hoax and promptly registered an incident with local police. The police have launched investigations but have warned the public on the rising cases of scams using AI voice technology.

Experts warn citizens, especially the elderly, against acting on unusual calls from their family and relatives. The experts also warn about verification from another reliable source before taking action regarding money matters. "This case serves as a somber reminder of how technology can be misused. It also underlines the need for alertness and prudence, concluded another local law enforcement officer.

As AI technology advances with newer and more sophisticated means of exploiting unsuspecting victims, so does the encouragement by the authorities for a victim to report suspect scams immediately to prevent other potential victims from being scammed in the same manner.
