The music world is mourning the loss of Freddie Salem, the legendary guitarist known for his electrifying performances with the Southern rock band The Outlaws. Salem passed away at the age of 70 due to complications from cancer, leaving behind a legacy that resonated deeply with fans and fellow musicians alike.

In a heartfelt Facebook post, The Outlaws shared the news, stating, “It’s with a heavy heart that we have to tell Outlaws fans about the passing of our former guitarist Freddie Salem. Freddie will be remembered for his outgoing personality and passion for music. He was an electric performer and beloved musician, and he will be missed.” His most recent band, Freddie Salem & Lonewolf, echoed these sentiments, declaring, “This morning, the Heavens parted for the arrival of a legend. Rock on high, Freddie Salem. Until we meet again.”

Salem’s journey with The Outlaws began with their 1978 album Bring It Back Alive, and he went on to contribute to four more records before parting ways in 1982 after the release of Los Hombres Malo. Reflecting on his departure, he once told the Akron Beacon Journal, “It was just one of those things. Musically and career-wise, I wanted a little more.” Even after his exit, his influence continued, with songwriting credits on their 1986 album Soldiers of Fortune and the 1993 live album Hittin’ the Road.

Born in Akron, Ohio, Salem was immersed in music from an early age, thanks in part to his father’s bar and its jukebox, which ignited his passion for rock and roll. He started playing guitar professionally at just 16 and joined The Outlaws at 23, quickly becoming a standout talent.

In addition to his work with The Outlaws, Salem launched a solo project, Freddie Salem & the Wildcats, which produced the album Cat Dance in 1982. He also opened several live music venues in Akron during the 1990s, showcasing his commitment to nurturing the local music scene.

The tributes have poured in from friends and fellow musicians. Former Outlaws drummer Monte Yoho wrote on Facebook, “I am deeply saddened by the passing of Freddie Salem. We shared years on the road together. I will remember his sense of humor the most. Love you, Freddie!”

Freddie Salem may have left this world, but his music and spirit will continue to inspire generations of rock fans. Rock on, Freddie!
