Robert Smith Calls Out Ticketmaster's Controversial Dynamic Pricing
Robert Smith, the legendary frontman of the cult rock band The Cure, came down on Ticketmaster's dynamic pricing model calling it a "scam" and "greed-driven."
Smith has been quite vocal against the mega-ticketing company in the past, expressing frustration regarding the firm's practices in an interview recently.
Dynamic pricing refers to the process wherein ticket prices adjust according to changes in demand. It has become quite common within the music industry. Critics have argued that the model makes tickets ridiculously expensive-at times painfully so-for popular artists. Smith became one of them who think that dynamic pricing discriminates against the fans.
"It's a scam," he said. "Ticketmaster is driven by greed, not by a desire to make music accessible to fans. They're just trying to squeeze as much money out of people as possible."
Smith's comments came as the company continues to suffer criticism over its business model. The past two years have seen the company criticized over ticket scalping, website crashes, and egregious fees. The company has pushed back against the attacks, depending on the rationale that dynamic pricing is needed in order to ensure tickets reach the fans and not the scalpers.
According to him, far from that which Ticketmaster claims, the service company only cares about its profits, not its fans. "They don't care about the fans," Smith said. "They just care about the money."
The lead frontman of the Cure called for a boycott of Ticketmaster and persuaded his fans to find other ways to acquire tickets. He is also campaigning for legislation which will regulate the industry of selling tickets.
This is not the first time Smith attacks Ticketmaster. Several years ago, he publicly criticized the company for its fees and for dominating the resale market; but this time, he sounds particularly angry. Fans must find these claims very frustrating.
Whether Ticketmaster changes its operating model remains to be seen while the debate continues over dynamic pricing. According to Smith, "fans are now seeking transparency and fairness" about the ticketing process.
