Riot Games Pulls the Plug on Hytale: Hypixel Studios to Wind Down
Riot Games has officially shut down Hypixel Studios and scrapped the much-anticipated sandbox game Hytale, ending nearly a decade of development. Approximately 150 staffers were laid off, and the studio will spend the next few months wrapping up operations.
Initially funded by Riot after its acquisition in 2020, Hypixel Studios restructured its game engine and repeatedly expanded Hytale’s ambitions—extending its development timeline to nearly ten years . However, despite these investments, senior developers noted they couldn’t deliver a final product that lived up to their vision.
On r/Games, critics expressed disappointment in the leadership:
“This is such a cop out answer … it’s your job to manage scope and make the tough calls” .
Comments noted leadership challenges and missed milestones:
“One of my friends … left a few months ago because of terrible leadership.”
Hytale aimed to combine a Minecraft-like world with RPG-style combat, modding support, cinematic tools, and procedurally generated dungeons. It promised a rich creative platform for both casual players and content creators. But escalating feature goals—including a full scripting system and web-based modeling tools—put heavy strain on resources.
Riot Games first backed Hypixel financially before fully acquiring the studio in April 2020. Despite a robust financial runway, the persistent delays—from migrating to a new engine to refactoring core systems—ultimately made the project unsustainable.
With development ending, Hypixel Studios faces a phased shutdown. Redeployed team members or disbandment is expected quietly in the coming months. Riot appears to be reallocating its gaming division toward more polished and profitable ventures—such as League of Legends and Valorant—and moving away from big-budget sandbox risks.
Hytale’s cancellation serves as a cautionary tale: even visionary ideas can falter under scope creep and development drag. A once-promising game lost its momentum to shifting leadership priorities and unresolved ambition. For now, fans hold onto fragments of the dream—modding tools, cinematic vision, and RPG mechanics—for what might have been a landmark in sandbox gaming.
