Richard Tillman, Brother of NFL Hero Pat Tillman, Arrested After Post Office Car Crash
Early on July 20, 2025, authorities in San Jose, California, arrested Richard Tillman, brother of former NFL star–turned–Army Ranger Pat Tillman, after he drove his vehicle into the Almaden Valley Post Office, igniting a large fire inside the building. No injuries were reported, but the blaze required a second-alarm response with around 50 firefighters to control.
Arrest Details and Investigation
Richard, 44, live-streamed the incident, identified himself to responders as Pat Tillman’s brother, and was taken into Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of arson, held without bail. Federal investigators are also reviewing graffiti sprayed on the post office's exterior to determine its relevance.
Post Office Damaged, Services Disrupted
The crash severely damaged the vehicle bay and lobby, forcing the post office to temporarily close. Mail services were rerouted to the Willow Glen Post Office until repairs are completed.
A Brother’s Complex Legacy
Richard Tillman has previously drawn attention for his outspoken criticism of religious narratives during his brother Pat's 2004 funeral, famously declaring:
“He’s not with God. He’s f-king dead.”
Pat Tillman, who once turned down a lucrative NFL career to enlist in the military after 9/11, was tragically killed by friendly fire in Afghanistan in 2004. His actions and sacrifice have since become an enduring legacy in American football and military history
