PlayStation Network Restored After Prolonged Outage
PlayStation users experienced significant disruptions this week due to a massive outage on Sony’s gaming network that affected both PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 consoles, as well as older systems. The outage, which began on Monday night, lasted for about eight hours and affected almost every aspect of the PlayStation Network (PSN), including online gaming, sign-ins, and network features. Gamers were unable to access multiplayer games, and even single-player titles that required an online connection were impacted.
According to Sony’s official PSN Service Status page, all services were reportedly restored by Tuesday morning, but some players continued to report issues, particularly with game streaming and network connectivity. A message on the page acknowledged the difficulties, stating, “You might have difficulty launching games, apps, or network features. We’re working to resolve the issue as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience.”
While Sony did not immediately provide an explanation for the outage, it did confirm via its Japanese PlayStation support page on X (formerly Twitter) that it was aware of the problems. However, communication regarding the outage was sparse, leading many players and game developers to rely on each other via social media for updates.
Some gamers encountered error messages like the “PS5 error Code WS-116522-7,” indicating system software update failures during the downtime. Fortunately, offline games appeared to be largely unaffected by the outage. Additionally, a separate issue that had been causing errors with the home screen artwork for PS5 games was also resolved, though it was unclear if the two problems were related.
The disruption left many PlayStation fans frustrated due to the lack of transparency from Sony regarding the issue. As the platform returns to normal, users are hoping for more clarity from the company on what caused the widespread outage.
