More than 90,000 residents in Rockdale County, east of Atlanta, were instructed to continue sheltering in place on Monday, following a significant fire at the BioLab chemical plant in Conyers, Georgia. The fire, which broke out early Sunday, sent a massive plume of dark smoke into the air, visible from miles away. Air quality surveys conducted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Georgia’s Environmental Protection Division confirmed the presence of chlorine, a harmful irritant, in the air around the fire.

Authorities advised residents to turn off air conditioning units and keep windows and doors closed to minimize exposure. Although the fire was brought under control by late Sunday afternoon, county officials maintained the shelter-in-place order for safety reasons. Roads in the area, including a section of Interstate 20 that was closed Sunday, were reopened Monday morning, but several other roads and government offices remained closed.

On Sunday, people living in northern Rockdale County, north of I-20, were ordered to evacuate, affecting approximately 17,000 residents in the Conyers area. Others were told to shelter in place as authorities monitored the air quality.

The fire at the BioLab plant was triggered when a sprinkler system malfunctioned at around 5 a.m. Sunday. This caused water to mix with a water-reactive chemical, leading to the dangerous plume of chemicals. Rockdale County Fire Chief Marian McDaniel confirmed there were employees inside the plant at the time, but no injuries were reported.

BioLab, which manufactures pool and spa water care products, issued a statement emphasizing their commitment to community safety and noting that specialized teams from out of state were being deployed to assist in containing and remediating the situation.

A smaller fire on the plant’s roof had been initially contained but reignited later in the afternoon, contributing to the ongoing emergency response efforts. As of Monday, officials were continuing to work to fully resolve the situation and ensure the safety of the community.
