One Dead Following Shooting at Tuskegee University Campus

A tragic shooting disrupted Homecoming Week at Tuskegee University in Alabama early Sunday, resulting in one death and several injuries, including some Tuskegee students. University officials confirmed the deceased was not a student, while injured individuals, including a female student with a stomach wound and a male student with an arm injury, are receiving care at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika and Baptist South Hospital in Montgomery.

Tuskegee Police Chief Patrick Mardis expressed frustration over the incident's chaotic aftermath, stating, "Some idiots started shooting," and noted that emergency vehicles struggled to access the scene due to the large crowd. The shooting took place on campus as the university’s historic 100th Homecoming Week was concluding. The school assured that student accountability processes are ongoing, and parents have been notified.

Miles College, Tuskegee's opponent for the weekend's football game, offered condolences in a public statement, expressing sympathy and solidarity with the Tuskegee community. "Our hearts are with the Tuskegee family as they face the tragic aftermath," the statement read, "and we pray for healing and justice."

This tragic event echoes a similar shooting that occurred just over a year ago on Tuskegee’s campus, where four individuals were injured during an “unauthorized party.” This weekend's shooting highlights ongoing concerns about campus safety, especially during high-attendance events.

Tuskegee University, an institution with a significant legacy, was designated the first historically Black college to achieve Registered National Landmark status in 1966 and became a National Historic Site in 1974. The university, located about 40 miles east of Montgomery, is home to approximately 3,000 students. The Alabama State Bureau of Investigation is currently handling the investigation.
