Nintendo Switch 2 Becomes Company’s Fastest‑Selling Console
Nintendo revealed today that the new Switch 2 has shattered internal launch records, selling 3.5 million units in its first four days. Coming to market on June 5, it now stands as the fastest-selling console in Nintendo’s history.
The Switch 2 offers several notable upgrades:
- Larger, sharper display
- Improved graphics and performance
- Retains its signature hybrid design—playable at home or on the go
- Launch titles include crowd-pleasing hits such as Mario Kart World
These enhancements build on the success of the original Switch, which has sold 152 million units since its 2017 debut.
Nintendo is targeting 15 million Switch 2 units sold by March 2026, matching market analysts’ expectations. With this explosive start, the company is well-positioned—but questions remain about sustaining momentum past early enthusiasm.
Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America’s president and COO, celebrated the enthusiasm:
“Fans around the world are showing their enthusiasm for Nintendo Switch 2 as an upgraded way to play at home and on the go”.
The combination of enhanced hardware and a robust launch lineup appears to have resonated globally, reinforcing Nintendo’s hybrid console strategy.
Despite the strong debut, analysts note:
- Maintaining supply amid high demand may prove difficult
- Success beyond launch will depend on the pipeline of first-party titles
- The Switch 2 faces rising competition from PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC gaming platforms
Switch 2’s opening compares favourably with prior Nintendo launches. The original Switch sold approximately 2.7 million units in its first month—now surpassed within days. While legendary names like Game Boy Advance and Nintendo 3DS had strong starts, the hybrid Switch platform may be carving out a new benchmark
