Austria Invests in Sawmill and Packing in Western Ukraine

Austrians, already among the top three investors in western Ukraines Lviv Oblast, are boosting their links with the region, with plans to expand packing facilities and an ecologically-sound logging operation.

With neighboring Poland, Austria is a major investor in this region of 2.5 million people, once known in German as Lemberg, an eastern outpost of the Habsburg empire.

According to Lviv Oblasts Statistical Office, 15% of all foreign investments come from Austria. Last year, entrepreneurs invested nearly $8 million. Poland spent nearly $16 million.

Austria is eight hours by highway and a 90-minute flight to Vienna. Austrian Airlines operates four direct flights per week. In April, it will add three end of the day flights.

The latest investments come from Austrian family-owned businesses.
