The Galaxy Z Fold 6 from Samsung has remarkably become more pocket-friendly thanks to major design and functional advancements. In the past, large-screen foldables were frequently perceived as heavy and unwieldy, which rendered them less suitable for everyday use. By offering a phone that, even in comparison to other huge phones like the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max, fits comfortably in a pocket, the Z Fold 6 challenges this idea.
After less than a day of ownership, the Z Fold 6 has already exceeded my expectations in terms of convenience. Considering that the majority of large foldables are heavy and awkward to handle, my initial expectations were low. Even with the added bulk that the iPhone’s cover adds, the Z Fold 6 manages to blend in better with my pocket than my iPhone 15 Pro Max. The Z Fold 6 fits more firmly and comfortably into a pocket, as can be seen in the side-by-side images.
The Z Fold 6’s measurements show that portability has significantly improved. It weighs 239 grams, with a thickness of 12.1 mm, and a width of 68.1 mm when folded. When the Casetify Impact Case—which I use—is applied, the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s dimensions grow to 273 grams, 13 mm thick, and 82 mm wide from its original weight of 221 grams and 8.2 mm. The Z Fold 6, which is still reasonably small and manageable, feels much more lightweight than the iPhone because to the case’s added size.
This change is noteworthy, as the general perception has been that large-screen foldables are bulky and inconvenient. Many people would naturally gravitate towards the Z Flip series if they prioritize size and convenience. However, the Z Fold 6 demonstrates that a big-screen foldable can be both manageable and ergonomic. The phone’s modest thickness of 12mm and well-designed camera module contribute to its ease of use. The device feels comfortable to hold, and its small camera module doesn’t add much extra size, enhancing its practicality.
A comparison is provided by the Honor Magic V3, which is only accessible in China, for individuals who might be unsure about the benefits of the Z Fold 6. It weighs less—230 grams—and is slimmer—9.3 mm. At 74mm, it is wider than the iPhone 15 Pro Max, bringing its width closer. Although some users may find its wider shape appealing, the Z Fold 6 is more practical for daily chores because it maintains a balance between size and usability.
The Vivo X Fold 3 Pro is another competitor worth mentioning. It weighs 236 grams and is 72mm wide with a thickness of 11mm. Although its dimensions place it between the Honor Magic V3 and the Z Fold 6, it proves to be more challenging to use one-handed. This demonstrates that a thinner and wider design doesn’t necessarily translate to better usability. The Z Fold 6’s design makes it easier to handle, offering a more user-friendly experience compared to other foldables.
Over the past two days with the Z Fold 6, my experience has largely revolved around its ergonomic enhancements. While the phone’s software, camera, and processor updates are incremental rather than revolutionary, the design improvements make a significant difference. Despite the phone feeling similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 5 in many respects, the Z Fold 6 stands out due to its refined design and better usability.
The Z Fold 6’s durability has also been enhanced, making it comfortable to use without a case. This represents a major improvement from the original Galaxy Fold, which I wouldn’t have used without additional protection. The combination of hardware changes and increased durability has made the Z Fold 6 a noteworthy device in Samsung’s lineup. Last year, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 garnered more attention for its hardware updates, but the Z Fold 6 has seen the most significant changes this year. These updates are well-received, making the Z Fold 6 an appealing choice for those interested in big-screen foldables.
Although my final review is still in progress, my initial impressions remain positive. The Z Fold 6 is another excellent entry in Samsung’s foldable phone lineup. Its improved design, better ergonomics, and enhanced usability make it a standout device. The phone’s advancements, while not groundbreaking in every aspect, add up to a significant improvement over previous models. This makes the Z Fold 6 not just a technological marvel but also a practical and convenient option for daily use.
One gadget that shows how small design changes can add up to a more useful and user-friendly experience is the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6. The fact that a big-screen phone may be both practical and portable disproves the notion that foldables are large and awkward. An important advancement in the development of foldable smartphones is the Z Fold 6, which boasts an improved design and enhanced usefulness.
