On Wednesday, at its Unpacked presentation in Paris, France, Samsung revealed its newest foldable smartphones. Samsung’s continuous struggle with Apple for supremacy in the smartphone market is mostly driven by the new Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6, which are both running Google’s Android operating system system. At a starting price of $1,099 and $1,899, respectively, the Z Flip 6 and Z Fold 6 are positioned as premium devices—a $100 increase over their counterparts. To put things in perspective, the starting price of Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro is $999, while the Pro Max is $1,199. The entry-level model of Samsung’s S24 series costs $799, while the S24+ and S24 Ultra have higher prices of $999 and $1,299, each.

Samsung is promoting the Flip 6 and Fold 6 not just as foldable phones but as powerful devices capable of leveraging its Galaxy AI platform. This software, introduced with the S24 lineup earlier this year, offers various generative AI features including real-time translation, conversation capabilities, photo editing tools, and productivity enhancements. According to Samsung, artificial intelligence features are quite popular among its customers. The tech giant reports that 77% of S24 users access AI features weekly, with Google’s Circle to Search and Samsung’s Edit Suggestions among the most used. Circle to Search allows users to capture an image or text and search or translate it via the web, while Edit Suggestions offers AI-generated text suggestions for messages and emails.

The unique designs of the Fold 6 and Flip 6 enhance the use of Galaxy AI features. The new conversation feature in the Interpreter app allows users to chat in different languages by displaying spoken words on the phones’ cover and main screens. This feature can be particularly useful in real-world scenarios, such as conversing with someone who speaks a different language. Both phones are equipped with Google’s Gemini app, powered by Google’s AI models. Users can access Gemini by swiping from the corner of the screen or by saying, “Hey, Google.” The app offers various options, including brainstorming ideas for work projects, planning trip itineraries, and finding location information on Google Maps.

In terms of productivity, Galaxy AI now includes a new PDF translation feature for the Samsung Notes app, which retains the document’s layout while translating the text. This feature addresses the common issue of losing formatting during translation, making the process smoother and more efficient. Design-wise, the Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 have undergone minor physical enhancements compared to their predecessors, the Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5. The Z Fold 6 features a slightly larger 6.3-inch cover screen, making it feel more like a standard rectangular smartphone when closed. This addresses one of the common criticisms of the previous model, and even though the increase is just 0.1 inches, it is a welcome change.

The Z Flip 6, on the other hand, includes the same main camera as the flagship S24 and a new ultra-wide-angle camera. The battery size has also been upgraded to match the S24, meaning users won’t have to compromise on capabilities when choosing the Flip over Samsung’s mainline flagship. The Z Fold 6 comes with a 50-megapixel main camera, a 12MP ultra-wide-angle camera, and a 12MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom and up to 30x digitally enhanced zoom. Both phones are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip and feature 12GB of memory. Storage options for the Flip include 256GB and 512GB, while the Fold offers 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB options.
