Lauren Irving Steps into the Center Ring for Ringling’s Latest Circus

Lauren Irving, a talented singer, takes center stage in the revival of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, contributing her powerful vocals to the show’s opening and closing numbers. In a departure from the traditional ringmaster role, the reimagined circus features three central characters guiding the narrative, with Irving at the forefront. Speaking from the tour, she expressed her deep appreciation for being part of this iconic spectacle.

“I never get tired of hearing that I ran away and joined the circus,” Irving shared. “To actually be doing this is an honor I never knew that I needed in my life.”

Originally from Georgia, Irving brings a wealth of experience to the circus, having showcased her impressive singing talent at popular Florida theme park shows such as the “American Idol Experience” at Disney World and as Celestina Warbeck in Diagon Alley at Universal Studios’ Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

The current incarnation of the Ringling Bros. circus, without live animals (except for a robot dog named Bailey), relies on a cast of more than 75 performers from 18 different countries. The elaborate set, transported by over 30 tractor trailers, transforms arenas into magical spaces for audiences to enjoy.

While there is no traditional ringmaster in the reimagined circus, Irving acknowledges the significance of her role as a Black performer in the trio of show guides. She recognizes that her presence on stage offers representation and inspiration for audience members who see themselves reflected in her performance.

“Though there’s not a ringmaster in this reimagined version, I do recognize that there is this significance to me being in this role,” Irving explained. “I’m proud to be that person for the boy or girl who sees me in that position.”

Irving emphasized the inclusive nature of the circus, where performers from diverse backgrounds and languages come together to create a truly global spectacle. Having worked in Japan for three years at a Universal Studios theme park in Osaka, she appreciates the effort made to ensure everyone feels included, with translators available for the international cast.

As part of the show’s ensemble, Irving has a prime vantage point to observe audience reactions. While the circus features awe-inspiring stunts, one unexpected delight for both the cast and spectators has been Bailey, the robot dog. Playing a comedic role alongside another character, Nick Nack, Bailey’s lifelike mannerisms and endearing presence have captivated audiences.

“You never know until you get an audience, and as soon as we had the first show and the light came up on Bailey the robot dog, the audience went wild,” Irving shared. “I will admit, this robot dog has stolen my heart. She just has mannerisms and, well, she just feels real.”

In her role as a vocalist and a representative of diversity on stage, Lauren Irving contributes to the magic of the circus, creating a memorable and inclusive experience for audiences of all ages. The reimagined Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus continues to enchant spectators with its modern twist on a classic spectacle.
