Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis finds herself in the midst of a contentious legal battle to disqualify her from prosecuting a high-profile election subversion case involving former President Donald Trump and his associates. Democrat Christian Wise Smith, a former Fulton prosecutor and Atlanta solicitor, has thrown his hat into the ring, announcing his candidacy to challenge Willis in the upcoming primary. Shortly after Smith’s announcement, Republican lawyer Courtney Kramer, who previously worked in the Office of the White House Counsel under Trump, also entered the race.
The primary contest is set to take place this spring, with the top two vote-getters advancing to the November general election. Despite Fulton County being a long-standing Democratic stronghold, Kramer’s vocal support for Trump may present challenges in garnering support.
Willis gained national attention following the 2020 election when she initiated an investigation leading to criminal conspiracy charges against Trump and others accused of attempting to manipulate Georgia’s electoral votes. However, recent revelations about her personal relationship with an attorney involved in the case have drawn increased legal and political scrutiny.

When asked about his decision to run amidst Willis’ legal troubles, Wise Smith stated that he would reserve his comments until more information is available, emphasizing his commitment to ensuring the citizens of Fulton County have confidence in their district attorney.
