Ed Sheeran‘s highly anticipated concert in Pittsburgh took a concerning turn as seventeen individuals were hospitalized for heat-related issues during the event.

Despite delivering an exceptional performance to a record-breaking crowd of approximately 51,000 fans, the combination of high temperatures and humidity posed health risks, resulting in several medical emergencies and hospital transports.

According to the Pittsburgh Bureau of EMS, the concert prompted a total of 37 service calls, with seventeen individuals requiring hospitalization. Heat-related problems accounted for the majority of the cases, with the humid conditions taking a toll on concert-goers. The high humidity, which reached 92% by the end of the night, coupled with temperatures that peaked at 72 degrees Fahrenheit during the day, created a challenging environment for those in attendance.

In addition to heat-related issues, a few other medical emergencies occurred during the event. Some concert attendees experienced falls, while one individual suffered a seizure. Two cases of cardiac arrest were also reported. One involved a worker who was involved in dismantling the stage setup inside the stadium, while the other was a paramedic from an outside agency who was leaving the Acrisure Stadium.

Despite the medical incidents, Ed Sheeran delivered a remarkable performance to his enthusiastic audience. Performing on an in-the-round stage with a rotating platform, the British singer entertained the largest crowd he has ever played for in Pittsburgh. For the first time in his career, Sheeran toured with a full band, incorporating electric guitars and drums, which added an extra level of energy to the opening songs “Tides” and “Blow.”

Ed Sheeran’s Pittsburgh concert, while memorable for his electrifying performance, unfortunately, saw a significant number of individuals requiring medical attention due to heat-related issues. With 17 hospitalizations and several other incidents reported, the combination of high temperatures, humidity, and the outdoor setting created a challenging environment for concert-goers. As the safety and well-being of attendees are paramount, it is a reminder for event organizers to take appropriate measures to mitigate the risks associated with extreme weather conditions during outdoor concerts.
