As the City of San José braces for the impact of an incoming atmospheric river, officials have taken proactive measures to mitigate risks to life and property. A proclamation of local emergency has been issued, prompting urgent evacuation orders for individuals residing unhoused along the Guadalupe River.
The impending atmospheric river is forecasted to bring heavy rain and strong winds to the region within the next 24 hours, with up to two inches of precipitation expected. The Santa Cruz Mountains are anticipated to receive significant rainfall, which could result in rising water levels in the Guadalupe River. In response, the Emergency Operations Center has been activated, coordinating closely with various partners including Valley Water, the National Weather Service, the County of Santa Clara, PG&E, and the Red Cross.
One of the primary concerns is the potential for flooding, particularly along the Guadalupe River. The National Weather Service has projected that the river may reach flood stage as early as 5 a.m. on Sunday, February 4, with water levels peaking around 10 a.m. To ensure the safety of vulnerable populations, including unhoused individuals residing along the riverbanks, evacuation orders have been issued. Those who choose to relocate will be provided with transportation to designated Overnight Warming Locations (OWL) at Roosevelt Community Center and Camden Community Center.
Strong winds accompanying the storm pose additional risks, including the possibility of downed trees and power poles. Residents are urged to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel during the inclement weather. The City has also provided resources for residents to prepare for the storm, including sandbag locations and safety tips for securing valuable items and vehicles.
In anticipation of the severe weather event, San José libraries and community centers will remain open during normal business hours, providing shelter and respite from the elements. Additionally, residents are encouraged to sign up for AlertSCC, the Santa Clara County emergency alert system, to receive timely notifications and updates.
As the City mobilizes its emergency response efforts, collaboration among government agencies, community organizations, and residents will be crucial in ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals impacted by the atmospheric river. By staying informed, prepared, and vigilant, the community can effectively navigate the challenges posed by this natural disaster and emerge resilient in the face of adversity.
For more information and updates, residents are advised to follow the City of San José on social media platforms and visit the City’s website for emergency notifications and storm preparedness resources.
