New York mayor-elect taps Keechant Sewell to be the NYPD’s first female commissioner

New York City’s Mayor elected Eric Adams, and made a historic choice to lead the city’s police force that has been the nation’s largest till date. Adams tapped Nassau County Chief of Detectives Keechant Sewell as the first female commissioner in the New York Police Department in 176-year history. Also ,She will become the third Black commissioner in the department’s history. Sewell  reported that “I’m here to meet the moment.” Her subsequent appointment comes at a tumultuous time for the city’s police force.

The continous talk of police reforms and the department in the city, as well as the nation, have created tensions tensions between the police as well as the residents. According to data from the NYPD, shootings and incidences of violent crime have raised bars in 2021 comparatively from the last year.

Adams’ new leadership, and new police commissioner will surely reset for the city’s police force of more than 36,000 0fficers along with their union leaders, and the ones who actively participated in creating more tense relationship with Mayor Bill de Blasio. At the Colleague’s funeral in 2015, the officers turned their backs.

Patrick J. Lynch , the head of the Police Benevolent Association of the City of New York, said that the union welcomes Sewell “to the second most toughest policing job in America.”

“The toughest, as it being an NYPD cop on the street and the New York City police officers have passed our breaking point,” Lynch added that “We need to fix that break in order to get our police department and our city back on course. We look forward to working with her to accomplish that goal.”

Sewell, has worked in the Nassau Police Department for 23 years in narcotics, major case and hostage negotiation,Also,she was promoted to chief of detectives last year.

In a video Swell is seen saying “I grew up in Queens,” “This is my city, and now this being my department, I feel like I’ve come full circle.”Adams, who will become the city’s second Black mayor, will be sworn in on Jan. 1.
