The Battle of Lake Changjin has been dubbed a propaganda film, a front for the continuing geopolitical struggle between China and the United States rather than a piece of entertainment. The film grossed $889.5 million worldwide, a $120 million increase over No Time to Die.

You’d be forgiven if you’ve never heard of the film The Battle of Lake Changjin. The fact that few people are aware of its existence, on the other hand, is remarkable given that it is without a doubt the highest-grossing film of 2021. No, it’s not a Hollywood blockbuster.

The Battle of Lake Changjin is a Chinese epic war film commissioned by the Community Party and reportedly the most costly film ever created in the country, with a budget of $200 million.

According to Box Office Mojo, it has grossed $889.5 million (Rs 6682 crores approximately). With $822 million, a Chinese production, Hi, Mom takes second place at the box office. With $758 million, No Time to Die, the most recent James Bond film and Daniel Craig’s final performance in the role, is in third place.

For decades, the Chinese market has been the most important for Hollywood films outside of North America. To give them an early boost, big-budget would-be blockbusters based on well-known properties like Marvel, DC, Star Wars, and Mission: Impossible are frequently released in China before North America.

According to certain media, Chinese authorities have made it difficult, if not impossible, for American studios to operate due to censorship and rules.

The Battle of Lake Changjin was born as a result of this. The film, directed by Chen Kaige, Tsui Hark, and Dante Lam, and featuring Wu Jing and Jackson Yee in prominent parts, has been dubbed a propaganda picture, less of a piece of entertainment and more of a front for the current geopolitical war between China and the United States.
