X-Men: First Class actor Edi Gathegi has affirmed that he still thinks Darwin’s death in X-Men prequel film was a mistake. The actor portrayed the character for one film prior to being killed off in its third act. At present, Gathegi can be seen on The Harder They Fall on Netflix.

It has been more than ten years since X-Men: First Class appeared in theaters, and some remain not exactly excited about the death of the seemingly death-proof Darwin in the film. In fact, in a new interview with Comicbook, Darwin actor Edi Gathegi noticed that he felt the character’s First Class death wasn’t handled well and that Darwin currently merits reclamation. The actor said:

First Class actor Edi Gathegi says Darwin's death in X-Men prequel film was a mistake 2

I adored Darwin. He became my favorite. It was always about Wolverine for me, and then when I learned about Darwin, I said, ‘Wait a minute. This fella is a G. He adapts to endure. He cannot kick the bucket. He’s battled the Hulk and transported to space because he was dying. And he’s kicked the bucket and regenerated. Good gracious, there’s such countless conceivable outcomes. And visually, as a filmmaker, you can place him in such situations and simply watch him adapt. And that’s really fun because a film is a visual medium. No doubt about it I imagined that was a gigantic miss, killing Darwin, and I think Darwin merits reclamation.

Past the chance of Darwin getting another crack at cinema magnificence, it’s also worth wondering if Gathegi would at any point get back to the job. As the Marvel Cinematic Universe inches consistently nearer to multiverse-centered stories with projects like Spider-Man: No Way Home and Loki, and as Fox X-Men actors get brought into projects like WandaVision, there’s always the likelihood that Marvel Studios could bring an actor like Gathegi over to the MCU as mutants eventually get introduced. That is not a guarantee at this point, but rather it’s certainly something conceivable if Marvel concludes that X-Men: First Class’ Darwin does indeed merit reclamation.
