The Suicide Squad essayist/director James Gunn explains why Bloodsport’s costume was so complicated to plan for the movie’s team. As the development to David Ayer’s 2016 film, The Suicide Squad—which debuted in theaters and on HBO Max on August 6—presents a large number of new characters to Task Force X and, thus, the DC Extended Universe. This time around, Rick Flag and Harley Quinn are joined by Peacemaker, Ratcatcher 2, Polka-Dot Man, King Shark, and Idris Elba’s Robert DuBois Aka Bloodsport (not to be confused with Will Smith’s Deadshot).
James Gunn often shares in the background content and Easter Eggs from his movies on social media. One of his latest Twitter posts explained how complicated Bloodsport’s costume was for The Suicide Squad’s team, calling it the most complicated costume he’s had to chip away at by a wide margin. The concept art also reveals 14 hidden weapons, including a two-piece rifle. Check out Gunn’s post and the concept art beneath:
In the funnies, Bloodsport can battle Superman thanks in large part because of a gadget that allows him to transport innovative weapons to his person whenever he wants them. The Suicide Squad interpretation of Bloodsport, while portraying him as a non-controlled character who wears a bulletproof skull helmet, his versatility is a consequence of a suit that holds an array of tools, including flamethrowers, grappling snares, and more. He can rapidly transform his firearm into whatever he wants it to be by utilizing the right attachments. Having the option to essentially manufacture weapons on the spot takes the place of the teleportation gadget of his comic book counterpart.
The Suicide Squad’s Bloodsport certainly isn’t as villainous as he is on the page. All of the movie’s “villains” are framed as misunderstood, even Peacemaker, who stars in HBO Max’s The Suicide Squad spinoff series, Peacemaker, which has been written and (for the most part) coordinated by Gunn. Outside of his work on Marvel Studios’ Guardian of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Gunn has teased a handful of other DC projects that may be underway. That being said, his first DC outing welcomed Bloodsport to return, something Elba has communicated interest in. On the off chance that and when we do see him again, what weapon he’ll employ is anyone’s theory.
