A 1990s post-screening reaction video to GoldenEye has resurfaced online, and it features Idris Elba. Created by essayist Ian Fleming in 1953, James Bond (aka 007) made his big-screen debut with the assistance of Sean Connery in Dr. No almost a decade later. Since then, a total of seven actors have played the British secret service agent in some of the most successful movies of all time, including Connery, Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan, and the current Bond, Daniel Craig.
As of late, Twitter user DoubleOKevin shared a retro video of audience members being asked what they thought about Brosnan’s presentation as Bond in GoldenEye. The exposure video appears to be from 1995 and sees a seemingly 23-year-old Elba standing with a companion as the pair give their thoughts on the movie and Brosnan’s spy saint. “He’s great,” Elba said. “He has all the charm. He has all the looks … He’s fit, he’s strong … Yeah, he’s alright.” Check out the full video below:
At the time of the above video, Elba was just starting his acting career in the UK. Now, Elba is a household name, appearing in everything from Luther, Fast and Furious, and Star Trek to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. All the more as of late, Elba played anti-legend Bloodsport in James Gunn’s DC Extended Universe film, The Suicide Squad. Ironically, Brosnan named Elba and Tom Hardy as his top choices to replace Craig as Bond following No Time to Die. Despite things coming round trip, nonetheless, Elba has claimed many times over that his association with the job is simply talk.
Similar as how Craig’s contemporary take on 007 was a departure from campier Bond films, including GoldenEye, Elba would bring a truly necessary change to the nearly 60-year canon. In any case, Elba is 49 years old and one of the most in-demand stars in Hollywood, so the actor doesn’t require the character to make a name for himself. What’s more, it seems likely that the studio would want to sign the following Bond to a multi-film contract to guarantee several projects with the new 007, and its unclear whether Elba would be interested in signing up for a drawn out responsibility. For the time being, all eyes are on No Time to Die, which will wrap up Craig’s overarching narrative. After numerous COVID-19-related delays and millions of dollars in marketing, the film has a challenging situation to deal with when it releases one month from now.
