Netflix’s ‘Pride and Prejudice’ Series: Everything We Know So Far

A New ‘Pride and Prejudice’ Adaptation is Coming to Netflix!

Netflix is reportedly working on a brand-new Pride and Prejudice series, adding to the ever-growing list of Jane Austen adaptations. Following the BBC’s announcement of The Other Bennet Sister, a spinoff focusing on Mary Bennet, Netflix is now developing its own take on the beloved classic.

Acclaimed author Dolly Alderton, best known for Everything I Know About Love, is set to write the script. However, according to Variety, the series has not yet been officially greenlit, and details remain scarce.

Will This Version Live Up to Expectations?

Netflix’s track record with Austen adaptations is less than stellar. The streaming service’s 2022 film adaptation of Persuasion, starring Dakota Johnson, was met with harsh criticism and a dismal 30% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics slammed the film for straying too far from Austen’s signature wit and depth, calling it “shallow” and “ham-fisted.”

Given this history, Austen fans are nervous about Netflix tackling Pride and Prejudice again. Social media reactions have been mixed to negative, with fans expressing their skepticism:

  • “Don’t trust Netflix making Pride and Prejudice.”

“Waking up and seeing that Netflix might do another adaptation for Pride and Prejudice is seriously the worst news to wake up to.”

This Isn’t Netflix’s First Attempt at ‘Pride and Prejudice’

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Netflix has planned a fresh take on Pride and Prejudice. Back in 2021, Variety reported that the platform was working on The Netherfield Girls, a modern, teen-friendly adaptation of Austen’s novel in the vein of Easy A and 10 Things I Hate About You.

Actress Maitreyi Ramakrishnan (Never Have I Ever) was set to play Lizzie Bennet, but three years later, there’s been no update on the project. With no release date or production news, it’s unclear whether The Netherfield Girls is still in the works or has been quietly shelved.

The renewed interest in Jane Austen adaptations isn’t surprising—historical romances are more popular than ever.

Netflix’s Bridgerton has been a massive hit, with Variety reporting that Season 3 amassed 91.9 million views in just 45 days. Other period dramas, like Apple TV+’s The Buccaneers, have also found success, with the show being renewed for a second season shortly after its premiere.

With this growing demand for Regency-era love stories, it makes sense that Netflix wants to bring Pride and Prejudice back to the screen.

BBC’s ‘The Other Bennet Sister’ – A Different Austen Spinoff

For those craving a new take on the Austen universe, the BBC is already working on The Other Bennet Sister. This series, based on Janice Hadlow’s novel, shifts the spotlight to Mary Bennet, often seen as the awkward and overlooked middle sister in Pride and Prejudice.

The show’s synopsis teases a refreshing twist, following Mary as she struggles with being overshadowed by her glamorous sisters. It promises a heartwarming and empowering journey, as Mary takes control of her own destiny.

So far, no cast or release date has been announced, but fans are eager to see how this unique adaptation unfolds.

Will Netflix’s ‘Pride and Prejudice’ Be a Hit or a Miss?

With Bridgerton’s continued success and the BBC diving into new Austen territory, Netflix’s take on Pride and Prejudice could either be a refreshing update or another disappointing adaptation.

For now, fans remain cautious—but hopeful—that the new series will do justice to Austen’s timeless story.
