Dept. Q: Netflix's Newest Dark Detective Drama Arrives This May

A Flawed Detective, A Mysterious Cold Case, and a Team of Misfits

Netflix is bringing mystery fans a gritty new drama that dives deep into unsolved crimes and emotional trauma. "Dept. Q," debuting on May 29, 2025, is a gripping procedural series starring Matthew Goode as Carl Morck, a brilliant but brooding detective navigating Scotland's coldest cases—and his own haunted past.

Set in the gothic city of Edinburgh, this adaptation of the bestselling Danish novels by Jussi Adler-Olsen brings together a stellar cast and the visionary storytelling of Scott Frank, the mind behind "The Queen's Gambit" and "Godless."

Who Is Carl Morck?

Detective Chief Inspector Carl Morck isn’t your typical hero. He’s abrasive, cynical, and emotionally scarred from a past shooting that left one officer dead and his partner paralyzed. Now relegated to the basement and put in charge of the newly created Department Q—essentially a PR move—Morck is tasked with solving long-forgotten cold cases.

But don’t mistake his isolation for weakness. Beneath Morck’s gruff exterior lies a deep drive for justice. As the series unfolds, he forms unexpected bonds with his misfit team and digs into crimes that reveal Edinburgh’s darkest secrets.

"There’s a kind part to him that’s there," says showrunner Scott Frank. "You just might have to scratch more than a little to get to it."

A Detective Show with Real Depth

Why Matthew Goode Was Perfect for the Role

Scott Frank always had Matthew Goode in mind for Morck. “Matthew just felt like this guy,” he says. “He brings intelligence, edge, and unexpected vulnerability.”

Goode himself wasn’t sure he was right for the role: “It’s the second time Scott’s cast me as someone I wouldn’t have seen in myself,” he said, referencing their work on "The Lookout."

The Story Behind Dept. Q

Based on the acclaimed Scandinavian book series, Dept. Q reimagines the story in Scotland, shifting the original setting from Copenhagen to Edinburgh. The show follows Morck and his team as they dive into a 16-year-old unsolved case from Aberdeen. The unit is formed as a cost-saving measure by higher-ups, but what they uncover is anything but routine.

Morck’s promotion is hardly glamorous—he’s basically being babysat in the basement. But when he starts investigating, he finds a purpose again. The deeper the case gets, the more dangerous the truth becomes.

"There was just something about the title—Department Q—that stayed with me," Frank said. "It’s mysterious and ominous."

Meet the Cast of Dept. Q

The show boasts a rich, talented ensemble:

  • Matthew Goode as Carl Morck
  • Chloe Pirrie as Merritt Lingard
  • Jamie Sives as DCI James Hardy
  • Mark Bonnar as Stephen Burns
  • Alexej Manvelov as Akram Salim
  • Leah Byrne as DC Rose Dickson
  • Kate Dickie as DCS Moira Jacobson
  • Shirley Henderson as Claire Marsh
  • Kelly Macdonald as Dr. Rachel Irving
  • Tom Bulpett as William Lingard

Goode praised the ensemble, calling it "one of the finest casts I’ve ever gotten to work with." His chemistry with Leah Byrne, Jamie Sives, and Alexej Manvelov stands out, especially as the core team that makes Dept. Q tick.

Cold Cases and Character Clashes

Think True Detective Meets Nordic Noir

Dept. Q isn’t just about solving crimes—it’s about clashing personalities, long-buried trauma, and finding unlikely friendships in the darkest places. The cold cases bring suspense, but the real hook is how these damaged individuals work together and find healing.

Frank compares it to Cheers, saying: “It’s not the setting or the premise—it’s the people.”

Why Edinburgh Is the Perfect Backdrop

While the books were Danish, Frank moved the story to Scotland, and the result is visually stunning. “Edinburgh is gothic, historic, and gritty,” he says. “It’s the perfect combo of modern and medieval.”

Goode agrees: “It’s a lovely fit. Both cities are ports, full of contradictions and charm.”

The location also fuels some of the show’s tension—especially since Goode’s English Morck has an obvious dislike for Scottish people (thanks to an ex-wife), which adds biting humor to the grim proceedings.

How Many Episodes and Who Directed It?

Dept. Q features 9 episodes. Scott Frank wrote or co-wrote every episode and directed six himself, ensuring his signature tone and pacing stays intact throughout the series.

When Can You Watch Dept. Q?
