The highly anticipated film “Challengers,” directed by Luca Guadagnino, has been chosen as the opening night selection for the 80th edition of the Venice Film Festival.

Starring Zendaya, Mike Faist from “West Side Story,” and Josh O’Connor from “The Crown,” this romantic tennis drama will have its world premiere out of competition in September, according to the festival organizers.

In “Challengers,” Zendaya portrays a tennis prodigy whose past intertwines with her present as her husband, played by Mike Faist, confronts a former best friend and her former boyfriend in a fierce on-court battle. The film’s spicy and suggestive teaser trailer, which recently made its debut, quickly became a viral sensation on social media, generating widespread attention and excitement.

Luca Guadagnino, an acclaimed Italian director, has previously showcased his films at the Venice Film Festival, including last year’s “Bones and All,” for which he received the Silver Lion award for directing. His other notable works, such as “A Bigger Splash” and “Suspiria,” have also been well-received by audiences and critics alike.

As the first major event in the fall festival season, the Venice Film Festival holds significant importance for films aiming for Oscar recognition. In the previous edition, the festival premiered “The Whale,” which earned Brendan Fraser the Best Actor award, along with several other potential awards contenders like “Tár,” “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed,” and Ana de Armas, who received a Best Actress nomination.

Venice Film Festival director Alberto Barbera described “Challengers” as cinema in its purest form, praising Luca Guadagnino’s ability to elicit exceptional performances from both Italian and international actors.

Barbera stated, “Guadagnino sets no limits to his creative energy in this film as he deals with topics such as love, friendship, and male rivalry, and brings to life an enthralling and affecting movie, full of irony, sensuality, and good nature.”

As the buzz surrounding “Challengers” continues to grow, fans eagerly await its premiere at the Venice Film Festival. The combination of a talented cast, an esteemed director, and an intriguing storyline promises to deliver a captivating cinematic experience.

The Venice Film Festival, renowned for showcasing remarkable works of cinema, serves as a significant platform for filmmakers to present their creations to a global audience. As “Challengers” takes the stage as the opening film, all eyes will be on this romantic tennis drama, anticipating its impact and potential accolades in the upcoming award season.
