Story
The year is 2030, and Katie (Awkwafina), an actress struggling to make ends meet in Hollywood, wins a multibillion dollar jackpot, instantly making her the richest person in California. But there is a catch: according to a new law, if the jackpot winner passes away within 24 hours of the draw, the winnings go to the holder of the losing ticket that is closest in number to the winning one.
As word gets out, chaos breaks out, and everyone in California who has ever lost a ticket sets out to murder Katie before dusk in order to take her prize. Katie ends up running, having to make her way through a city where everyone could be a threat.
The Lottery Ticket Protection Agency (LTPA) is a government agency that operates behind closed doors to protect jackpot winners. Agent John (John Cena) leads a team of unconventional agents, including tech-savvy but socially awkward Agent Max (Seann William Scott), the tough but witty Agent Lisa (Dolly De Leon), and the eccentric weapons expert Agent Frank (David Conk), who are assigned to save Katie.
A cast of characters as unpredictable as they are dangerous, including a disgruntled news anchor (Rosanna Scotto), a flamboyant game show host (Murray Hillmore) with a hidden agenda, and a failed actress-turned-assassin (Marian Green). Katie and her team encounter a series of bizarre and hilarious situations as they navigate the treacherous streets of Los Angeles.
In the backdrop, billionaire tycoon and covert lottery runner Mr. Wellington (Brian Ashton Smith), the mastermind behind the chaos, gleefully watches as he manipulates events to boost his ratings and profit from the spectacle.
Time is of the essence, danger lurks around every corner, and Katie’s only hope of surviving the day and winning the jackpot is her cunning, her unlikely team’s defense, and an increasing number of bizarre and hilarious tactics.
Plot
High-octane action-comedy “Jackpot!” is set in the year 2030 and centers on struggling actress Katie (Awkwafina), whose life takes an unexpected turn when she wins a multi-billion dollar jackpot. There is not much time for celebration, though, because California’s futuristic lottery laws have a unique clause that allows any ticket holder who kills the winner within 24 hours of the draw to lawfully claim the prize.
As word gets out, Katie becomes the target of a diverse group of would-be killers, all with distinct goals and eccentric personalities. Danny (Seann William Scott), a down-on-his-luck gambler seeking one last chance at redemption, and Brock (John Cena), a former soldier turned bounty hunter, are leading the charge.
Katie is not alone in this chaos. The government organization in charge of protecting lottery winners, the Lottery Ticket Protection Agency (LTPA), sends Tessa (Marian Green), their best agent, to watch out for her. The sheer number of competitors, including Josh Diogo’s Max and David Conk’s Officer Jerry, a cop with a moral dilemma, and Josh Diogo’s tech genius Max, quickly overwhelms Tessa’s team.
A succession of absurd and humorous situations befall Katie and Tessa as they dash through the city. The two must outsmart and outmaneuver their relentless pursuers as they go from high-speed chases on futuristic motorbikes to hiding out in the most unexpected places. Katie forges an unlikely friendship with Tessa along the way as she unearths courage and resourcefulness she never knew she possessed.
Climax: In a high-stakes match that will decide who wins the big prize, Katie must battle Brock, Danny, and a host of other desperate characters in the final showdown, which takes place in the center of Los Angeles.
The movie “Jackpot!” delves into the concepts of fate, luck, and the extent people will go to in order to gain wealth. The significance of friendship and staying loyal to oneself in the face of insurmountable obstacles are also emphasized.
