This weekend saw record-breaking attendance for writer-director Christopher Nolan‘s latest movie Oppenheimer, which helped it open to an astounding $80 million domestically.

The three-hour biopic, which follows the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, a theoretical physicist commonly regarded as the “father of the atomic bomb,” is hailed by critics for its nuanced portrayal of a complex historical character. It is narrated by Cillian Murphy.

The 2006 Pulitzer Prize-winning biography American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, one of several accounts of Oppenheimer’s life and legacy, served as the inspiration for the film.

Oppenheimer’s grandson, Charles Oppenheimer, claims that the great physicist’s family has its own unique perspective on how to portray him and more subtlety to provide.

After the passing of both his grandfather and grandmother, Katherine “Kitty” Puening Oppenheimer (played by Emily Blunt), Charles was born close to Santa Fe, New Mexico, in April 1975.

However, he claims that he and his father, Peter Oppenheimer, who spent some of his early years at Los Alamos during the Manhattan Project, had an extremely open conversation about his grandfather’s work when they were growing up.

Charles was interviewed by TIME about what his grandfather Oppenheimer gets right about him, what he would have altered, and the work he is currently doing to continue Oppenheimer’s legacy.

Charles Oppenheimer: Like most children, I learned about my grandparents via my parents, and I remember hearing at one point that Robert Oppenheimer was a well-known individual who had served his country during World War II.

Even though he may have been a soldier, he used his scientific skills to carry out his duties during the conflict. However, communication within the family was always quite open. So as I started learning more about how we were related to a person who other people were talking about, my dad was always there if I had a question.
