Meet the First Barbie with Type 1 Diabetes

Mattel has unveiled a new addition to its Barbie Fashionistas line: the first-ever Barbie with Type 1 diabetes (T1D). In partnership with Breakthrough T1D, the doll is designed to authentically reflect life with this condition—complete with a continuous glucose monitor (CGM), insulin pump, and blue polka-dot outfit symbolizing diabetes awareness.

Thoughtful, Empowering Design

  • CGM on her arm, held in place with pink heart-shaped medical tape and accompanied by a toy phone displaying blood sugar levels via an app.
  • Insulin pump at her waist, mirroring real-life self-care tools.
  • Blue polka-dot outfit, paying homage to the global symbol of diabetes awareness.
  • Pastel blue purse for snack or medical essentials on the go—teaching children that managing health is a normal part of life.

A Community-Centered Collaboration

This toy was developed in consultation with individuals living with T1D. Emily Mazreku from Breakthrough T1D said the doll brings essential visibility to the community, helping children feel connected and understood.

Honoring Real Advocates

Mattel also introduced custom Barbie dolls honoring two T1D advocates: Robin Arzón, a Peloton instructor, and model Lila Moss, reinforcing the message that living with diabetes doesn’t limit dreams.

What This Means for Kids & Culture

  • Inclusive play: Encourages empathy and normalizes medical devices in everyday contexts.
  • Visibility boosts confidence: T1D children can finally see themselves represented in play—a chance to feel seen and proud.
  • Continued progress: Mattel’s Fashionistas line now includes dolls representing diverse bodies, abilities, and health conditions—from Down syndrome and hearing aids to T1D.
