Massive Manhunt Launched After Birmingham's 5 Points South Mass Shooting Leaves 4 Dead, 18 Injured
A massive manhunt is underway after a deadly mass shooting on Saturday night rocked Birmingham’s popular Five Points South entertainment district. The shooting, which occurred just after 11 p.m., left four people dead and at least 18 others injured, turning a lively weekend night into a scene of chaos and tragedy.
The victims were caught in the crossfire of what authorities believe to be an isolated incident, though innocent bystanders suffered the brunt of the violence. Officer Truman Fitzgerald of the Birmingham Police Department stated, “We don’t believe this was random, but rather a targeted act where many innocent lives were tragically affected.” Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the ATF and FBI, are now assisting the Birmingham Police in the hunt for the perpetrators.
The incident unfolded outside Hush, a hookah and cigar lounge on Magnolia Avenue, as patrons were waiting in line. Witnesses reported hearing gunfire that may have come from a weapon modified with a “switch,” a device that converts a semi-automatic firearm into a fully automatic one. Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin addressed the danger posed by such illegal modifications, saying, “Glock switches are a top public safety issue in our city and state. These weapons, capable of discharging all bullets within seconds, have no place on our streets.”
The shooting led to immediate chaos as South Precinct officers responded to the scene. Two men and a woman were found unresponsive on the sidewalk, with a fourth man succumbing to his injuries at UAB Hospital. Emergency responders transported eight other victims from the scene, while more individuals made their way to local hospitals for treatment. At least four of the injured are reported to be in life-threatening condition.
Authorities believe multiple shooters were involved, firing into a group of people on the crowded sidewalk. Despite the massive police presence and a perimeter set up to contain the scene, no arrests have been made as of Sunday morning. Fitzgerald emphasized the importance of public cooperation, urging anyone with information or surveillance footage from nearby businesses to come forward, stating, “No detail is too small.”
The shooting has left the Five Points South district, known for its nightlife and vibrant atmosphere, in shock. On what should have been a typical bustling Saturday night, the area was instead filled with hundreds of onlookers as police blocked off streets and investigated the scene.
This tragedy marks Birmingham’s third quadruple homicide of 2024. The city has already seen a disturbing rise in violence, with 122 homicides this year, including this latest incident. Just months earlier, a drive-by shooting at an adult birthday party claimed four lives and injured nine others, while a February shooting in the Smithfield neighborhood also resulted in four deaths.
Fitzgerald pointed to the disturbing trend of disputes being settled with gun violence, echoing remarks made by Mayor Woodfin earlier this week. “These mass shootings have more to do with culture than criminality,” Fitzgerald said, noting that too many arguments are being ended with bullets rather than words.
The gun violence epidemic has spurred legislative efforts in Alabama. Lawmakers are considering a bill to ban the use of Glock switches, devices that are believed to have played a role in this latest shooting. Representative Phillip Ensler is sponsoring the legislation, which would make possession of such devices a Class C felony, punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
In the aftermath of this horrific event, Officer Fitzgerald took a moment to thank the city’s first responders, including the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service and the staff at UAB Hospital, for their swift action. “Often, the focus is on us as officers,” Fitzgerald said, “but rarely do we get the chance to publicly thank those who also bear the burden of this violence—the firefighters, paramedics, and hospital staff who treat the injured and witness the trauma.”
As investigators continue to piece together the events of Saturday night, the community is left grappling with the devastating toll of gun violence. Anyone with additional information is urged to contact Birmingham Police at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
