Massive Fire Erupts at Chevron Refinery, Flames Light Up Southern California Night Sky
Late Thursday night around 9:35 p.m. local time, a dramatic fire broke out at Chevron’s El Segundo refinery in the Los Angeles area. Witnesses described hearing a loud explosion before seeing huge orange flames and plumes of smoke shooting into the night sky.
Fire crews — including Chevron’s own emergency responders and local departments — quickly rushed to the site. Officials say the flames were contained within the refinery’s boundaries, and the blaze was largely limited to one section.
Chevron confirmed that all personnel and contractors are accounted for, and no injuries have been reported.
Impacts, Response & Community Measures
Nearby residents were instructed to shelter in place for a few hours as a precaution due to smoke and possible air pollutants, though no evacuations were ordered. Roads in surrounding areas were temporarily shut, and authorities monitored the air quality close to the refinery.
Mayor Karen Bass stated that there was no known impact to LAX airport operations at this time.
The refinery is critical to Southern California’s energy supply — it produces jet fuel, gasoline, and diesel. The fire broke out in a unit associated with converting fuel oils to jet fuel, raising questions about potential supply disruptions.
What We Don’t Know Yet & What’s Next
Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the explosion or fire. Experts will examine mechanical faults, leaks, or operational failures as possible triggers.
While the fire was substantial, analysts believe it is unlikely to significantly move broader oil markets. Still, localized fuel prices in California may experience upward pressure if production is affected.
Officials from Chevron, along with federal and state safety agencies, will carry out inspections and safety reviews to ensure no residual damage or long-term risks remain.
