Malik Nabers Carted Off: Giants Fear Torn ACL
New York Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers left the field in visible distress during the second quarter of Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers, and medical staff carted him off the field. The early diagnosis is grim — he is feared to have suffered a torn ACL in his right knee.
Nabers went down after leaping to catch a deep pass from rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart on what proved to be a free play (the Chargers had jumped offside). As he descended, his right leg appeared to buckle, and he immediately grabbed at it in pain.
His MRI is scheduled for Monday to confirm whether the ACL is truly torn.
What Nabers Meant to the Giants’ Offense
The timing of this injury couldn’t be worse for New York. Nabers had quickly established himself as the primary offensive threat. He entered Week 4 leading the team in receptions (16), receiving yards (251), and touchdown catches (2) for the season.
Last year, as a rookie, he shattered expectations — catching 109 passes for 1,204 yards and 7 touchdowns, earning Pro Bowl honors and setting a franchise rookie mark.
Losing him would force the Giants to drastically adjust. Names like Darius Slayton, Jalin Hyatt, and Wan’Dale Robinson are already being floated to absorb bigger roles.
Reaction, Risks & the Turf Debate
Giants head coach Brian Daboll was somber about the situation in his postgame comments. He admitted he didn’t yet have details from the medical staff but acknowledged the severity: “He’s an important piece of our team … we’ll see where it’s at.”
Quarterback Dart expressed his concern and support: “He’s going to be one of my first phone calls to check on him … Malik’s one of one.”
The injury also reignited debate over MetLife Stadium’s artificial turf, which some believe contributes to noncontact leg injuries like the one Nabers suffered. Former Giants wideout Odell Beckham Jr. publicly urged the NFL to ban turf fields, calling conditions “DeathLife.”
