Longhorns Edge Aggies, Advance to SEC Championship in Inaugural Season
In their first season in the Southeastern Conference (SEC), the No. 3 Texas Longhorns delivered a commanding performance in College Station, defeating No. 20 Texas A&M 17-7. The victory secured Texas a spot in the SEC Championship Game and showcased their readiness to contend for a national title.
Behind a career-high 186 rushing yards from running back Quintrevion Wisner and a suffocating defensive effort, Texas capped an impressive 11-1 regular season. The win also extended the Longhorns’ road game win streak to 11, currently the best in the FBS.
Dominant Defense Leads the Way
Texas' defense was relentless, holding the Aggies to just 146 passing yards and 102 rushing yards. Key moments included:
- Fourth-and-Goal Stand: The Longhorns’ defense stuffed Texas A&M running back Amari Daniels on a critical fourth-quarter fourth-and-goal play.
- Early Interception: Defensive back Michael Taaffe snagged an interception in the red zone to halt an Aggies drive.
- Critical Stops: Texas made three pivotal fourth-down stops throughout the game.
Defensive lineman Alfred Collins confidently summed up the unit's performance:
"Best in the nation."
Wisner and Ewers Overcome Adversity
Wisner carried the offensive load with 33 carries for 186 yards. Quarterback Quinn Ewers, despite playing with a high ankle sprain, added 218 passing yards and a touchdown, showing grit in the face of adversity.
Backup quarterback Arch Manning provided a spark with a 15-yard rushing touchdown, a new wrinkle in the red zone attack.
Even after losing standout left tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. to an ankle injury, Texas' offensive line stood firm, enabling the Longhorns to rack up 26 first downs.
Sarkisian Preaches Class After Rivalry Win
Following the game, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian made a point to steer his players away from the kind of on-field altercations seen in other rivalry games that weekend, such as Michigan-Ohio State.
"Rivalries are great, but there's a way to win it with class," Sarkisian said. "We shouldn't be on their logo, we shouldn't be planting any flags... and I'd like to get the same respect in return."
Texas fans, however, couldn’t resist chanting “SEC” in the final moments, celebrating their team’s seamless transition from the Big 12.
A Date with Georgia Looms
The Longhorns will face No. 7 Georgia in the SEC Championship Game, a rematch of their lone loss this season. Georgia handed Texas a 30-15 defeat in Austin on October 19, but the Longhorns have since rebounded with five straight wins.
Sarkisian emphasized the significance of the opportunity:
"We've earned that right... Georgia is a great team, and we're going to have to prepare really well to try to come out on top."
Conclusion
Texas' performance against Texas A&M, coupled with their stellar season, proves they are not just SEC newcomers but legitimate contenders for a national championship. The upcoming showdown with Georgia offers the Longhorns a chance for redemption and a ticket to the College Football Playoff.
