Laurel Girls Basketball Clinches MHSAA Class 5A State Championship with Dominant Performance
In a thrilling display of skill and determination, the Laurel girls basketball team secured victory in the MHSAA Class 5A state championship game, defeating Canton with a commanding score of 40-32. The game, held at the Mississippi Coliseum on Friday night, saw Laurel 28-3 assert its dominance early on and maintain control throughout, clinching its second girls basketball state championship in program history.
Despite Canton’s initial 3-pointer to kick off the game, Laurel quickly took charge, embarking on a 9-0 run to establish a 9-5 lead by the end of the first quarter. Led by the stellar performance of sophomore forward Kayllis Walker, who earned the game’s MVP honors, Laurel surged ahead with a 26-9 lead by halftime, showcasing their offensive prowess and defensive tenacity.
Walker’s exceptional contributions were a highlight of the game, as she tallied an impressive stat line of 17 points, 12 rebounds, three steals, and two blocks. Junior guard Mariss Ulmer also made significant contributions with nine points, complementing Walker’s dominant presence on the court.
Throughout the game, Laurel capitalized on Canton’s errors, converting turnovers into points and outrebounding their opponents by a margin of 42-27. The team’s relentless pursuit of success was evident in their ability to score 21 points off 21 turnovers, demonstrating their efficiency and strategic execution.
Despite a late surge from Canton in the fourth quarter, Laurel remained composed and focused, limiting their opponents’ scoring opportunities and ultimately sealing the victory. With this win, Laurel extends its winning streak to an impressive 23 consecutive games dating back to December 7, further solidifying their status as a powerhouse in Mississippi high school basketball.
