Lady Gaga and Michael Polansky Collaborate on New Album ‘Harlequin’: A Creative and Personal Journey
Lady Gaga has once again taken the music world by storm with her latest studio album Harlequin, but this time, she had a special partner by her side—her fiancé, Michael Polansky. Released on September 27, Harlequin serves as a companion album to the upcoming Joker: Folie à Deux film, in which Gaga stars as Harley Quinn (known as Lee in the movie).
Polansky, known for his successful career outside the entertainment industry, took on a new role for this project as co-executive producer. Not only did he help shape the album, but he and Gaga also co-wrote four tracks together: “Good Morning,” “Get Happy,” “On When the Saints,” and “If My Friends Could See Me Now.” The collaboration represents a merging of both their personal and professional worlds, highlighting the strong partnership they’ve built since they began dating in 2020.
Harlequin consists mainly of covers of classic standards and show tunes, which Gaga and Polansky updated with a fresh sonic twist. The one original song on the album, “Happy Mistake,” was co-written by Gaga and longtime collaborator Bloodpop. This track provides fans with a glimpse into the creative spontaneity that marks this album, an approach inspired by Gaga’s deep connection with her character in Joker: Folie à Deux.

During an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, Gaga shared insights into the making of the album, revealing how her portrayal of Lee had a lasting impact on her creatively. “I’ve always created characters in my music, but when I made Lee for Joker, she stayed with me. I wanted to make an album that reflected her complexity—an album where I could do whatever I wanted, musically, whenever I felt like it.”
The result is a versatile record that blends blues, funk, soul, and other genres, reflecting the multidimensional persona of her Joker character. Gaga embraced the freedom to push musical boundaries, much like the ever-evolving Harley Quinn herself.
Fans were treated to the announcement of Harlequin earlier in the week through a series of cryptic social media posts and billboards. Alongside the album’s release, Gaga reassured her loyal fanbase that original music is still on the horizon. Playfully referring to Harlequin as “6.5” in her discography, she teased that her next pop album, LG7, is set to drop next year, with a new single arriving as soon as October.

In a recent interview with Vogue, Gaga revealed that Polansky was the driving force behind her decision to return to pop music. “Michael told me, ‘Babe, I love you, but you need to make pop music again,’” she shared. Polansky’s encouragement helped Gaga reignite her passion for creating music that makes her happy, a sentiment he echoed when he said, “I saw a fire in her during the Chromatica tour, and I wanted to help her keep that alive.”
The couple also made their red carpet debut at the Joker: Folie à Deux premiere in London, cementing their relationship as both a romantic and creative partnership. As Gaga continues to balance her artistic evolution with her personal life, Harlequin stands as a testament to the power of collaboration, love, and creative freedom.
