Keira Knightley on 'Black Doves': Why It's the Perfect Christmas Escape Route
Keira Knightley unleashes chaos and action in her thrilling Christmas series, "Black Doves."
When you think of Christmas viewing, festive rom-coms like Love Actually usually come to mind. But if you're craving something a little less sentimental and a lot more explosive, Keira Knightley’s new Netflix series Black Doves might just be your perfect holiday escape.
Set against the backdrop of a high-stakes international conspiracy, Black Doves blends espionage, action, and unexpected twists — all wrapped up in a holiday setting. The show marks Knightley’s return to television after more than two decades and is her first major TV role since 2002's Doctor Zhivago. In this gripping action thriller, Knightley plays Helen, a skilled spy thrust into a deadly conspiracy after her secret lover is murdered. With the help of her assassin friend Sam (Ben Whishaw), she uncovers a web of lies, betrayal, and assassination attempts — all in time for Christmas.
Keira Knightley’s Return to Action: An Unexpected Christmas Thrill
Knightley, best known for her roles in action-packed films like Pirates of the Caribbean and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, was thrilled to return to the physical demands of an action role for Black Doves. “It was amazing to get back into that side of performing,” Knightley shares. “It was very exciting, and surprisingly, the muscle memory was still there. It was nice not to freak out about it this time around, especially being a little older.”
With her background in action, Knightley dove into mixed martial arts, boxing, and Filipino knife-fighting to prep for her role as Helen. The intense training paid off in fight scenes that feel both authentic and dynamic, especially the brutal jewelry shop battle in Episode 5. Knightley admits she wanted to go even further with her character, suggesting she should kill her rival, Dani (played by Agnes O’Casey). But creator Joe Barton had other plans: “You’re not allowed to kill her,” Barton would remind her.
The Dynamic Between Helen and Sam: A Bond Built on Trust
One of the standout features of Black Doves is the deep, complicated relationship between Helen and Sam. Played by Ben Whishaw, Sam is Helen’s best friend, confidant, and occasional partner-in-crime. Their on-screen chemistry is electric, which Knightley attributes to their natural rapport off-camera.
“We really got on, and that was so thrilling to play off,” Knightley reflects. “We had such a strong connection, and it was great to build that friendship on-screen. Joe had already written the relationship in such a clear way, and it really worked.”
While Helen and Sam share a close bond, the espionage world they navigate is anything but stable. Knightley hopes that in a potential second season, she’ll get to explore their dynamic even further. “We were always asking Joe, ‘Can we please have more scenes together?’” she says, laughing. “The moments we had together felt so real, and I’d love to dive deeper into that.”
Helen’s Secret Past: Unraveling the Mystery
In addition to the action-packed sequences, Black Doves also delves into Helen’s mysterious backstory. From the moment Helen is introduced, there’s a palpable sense that she’s hiding something — or someone. Over the course of the season, Knightley’s portrayal of Helen as both a fierce and vulnerable woman comes to life as viewers learn more about her troubled past.
“I had a lot of questions about Helen’s backstory when we first started,” Knightley admits. “One of my big questions was, ‘Did she kill her father?’ Joe was pretty adamant that she didn’t. But Helen is definitely a mystery to me, too. We worked hard to create this character, and I’m still discovering things about her.”
Throughout the season, clues about Helen’s life — like her mother’s lighter — provide insight into the character’s complex motivations. Knightley hopes that Season 2 will delve even deeper into her troubled past, especially as Helen’s marriage to Wallace (Andrew Buchan) faces new challenges.
Season 1 Finale: Cliffhangers and Unanswered Questions
As Black Doves wraps up its first season, viewers are left with more questions than answers. The shocking revelation about Jason’s true identity and Helen’s uncertain future set the stage for what’s to come. Knightley, who didn’t know how the season would end until shortly before filming the finale, was as surprised as the audience by the twists and turns in the story.
“I had no idea how it was going to end,” Knightley admits. “It wasn’t finalized until we were filming, and the shoot-out in Episode 6 was handed to me just two days before we shot it. It kept evolving as we went along.”
As the season concludes, Helen faces a major decision: leave the world of espionage behind, or continue down a dangerous path. Knightley believes Helen’s addiction to the thrill of the game plays a significant role in her choices. “She loves the excitement, the importance of it all,” she explains. “It’s an ego thing, but also a sense of identity. Even though she knows she should leave, it’s tough for her.”
What’s Next for Helen? Hints at Season 2
While Season 1 may have ended on a cliffhanger, Knightley is eager to explore more of Helen’s journey in the future. However, she’s still waiting for the green light on Season 2. “I’ve been emailing Joe saying, ‘What happens next?’ and he’s been a bit elusive,” Knightley laughs. “I’m not in the process yet, but I’m hopeful. I’d love to dive deeper into Helen’s marriage with Wallace, especially now that he knows about her affair.”
One thing is certain: Helen’s dangerous world isn’t going away anytime soon.
Why 'Black Doves' Is the Ultimate Christmas Escape
So, why should you tune into Black Doves this holiday season? According to Knightley, it’s the perfect antidote to the usual Christmas cheer. “It’s the anti-Christmas series, and we all need one. You can watch Love Actually, and then you need the one where everything blows up,” she jokes. “Sometimes the holidays can be intense, and you need an escape. Black Doves is your escape.”
Whether you’re looking for a thrilling rollercoaster ride or a deeper dive into complex characters, Black Doves offers everything you need — and more
