Jon Bernthal on Why He Initially Walked Away from 'Daredevil: Born Again' and What Brought Him Back

Jon Bernthal’s Punisher Return: Why He Initially Said No to 'Daredevil: Born Again'

Jon Bernthal is officially back as Frank Castle, a.k.a. The Punisher, in Marvel’s Daredevil: Born Again. However, his return almost didn’t happen. The actor, who last played the character in The Punisher (2017-2019), initially turned down the opportunity to reprise the role. Why? According to Bernthal, the original direction of Born Again didn’t align with his vision for the Punisher. Only after a major creative overhaul did he reconsider stepping back into the role.

Why Jon Bernthal Initially Walked Away

Before Marvel revamped Daredevil: Born Again, the series had a different approach—one that Bernthal wasn’t interested in. The initial plan was reportedly a procedural-style drama that strayed from the darker, complex storytelling seen in Netflix’s Daredevil and The Punisher.

Bernthal explained:

“Ultimately, I didn’t see it. What they wanted from Frank [didn’t] really make sense to me and I thought would not appeal to the fans.”

This led him to decline the offer, feeling that the character wouldn’t be done justice.

What Changed? The Creative Overhaul That Brought Bernthal Back

Marvel Studios later restructured Daredevil: Born Again, hiring The Punisher executive producer Dario Scardapane as the new showrunner. The studio also brought in key figures who had previously helped shape the character, such as second-unit director Phil Silvera and stunt coordinator Eric Linden.

Additionally, Bernthal was included in conversations about Frank Castle’s psychological depth and brutality, which made him feel more confident about the direction. This collaboration was a game-changer, convincing him that Marvel was taking Frank Castle seriously.

Frank Castle’s Role in Daredevil: Born Again

Bernthal’s Punisher makes his return in Daredevil: Born Again Season 1, Episode 4. In this episode, Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) tracks down Frank Castle while investigating a brutal murder. Their reunion, however, is anything but warm—Frank nearly attacks Matt before the two get down to business.

Though his screen time is limited, Bernthal described it as a “toe dip” into the role, ensuring that Castle’s reintroduction felt true to the character. Fans can expect to see more of him in future episodes, as well as in additional Marvel projects.

The Punisher’s Future: A Standalone TV Special

Bernthal’s return wasn’t just for Daredevil: Born Again. Following his reintroduction, Marvel greenlit a standalone Punisher TV special, with Bernthal working alongside director Reinaldo Marcus Green. The actor has even contributed to the writing process, ensuring that the project delivers the raw and brutal authenticity that fans expect.

“This special is going to be psychologically complex, brutal, and unforgiving. Violence has consequences, and we want to explore that in a real way,” Bernthal teased.

Frank Castle’s Impact on Matt Murdock

In Daredevil: Born Again, Frank Castle plays a crucial role in Matt Murdock’s internal struggle. While Matt fights to keep his morality intact, Frank relentlessly challenges him, pushing him toward his darker instincts. This dynamic echoes their complicated relationship from the original Daredevil series and will likely play a major role in the show’s overarching storyline.

What’s Next for Bernthal’s Punisher?

While Marvel has yet to announce a full Punisher series revival, Bernthal’s involvement in upcoming projects signals that the character has a future in the MCU. The actor has expressed gratitude that Marvel is giving him creative agency to shape Frank Castle in a way that feels true to the source material.

With Daredevil: Born Again set to explore new depths of Hell’s Kitchen’s most infamous vigilantes, fans can look forward to seeing the Punisher back in action—on his own terms.
