Joker: Folie a Deux—A Box Office Breakdown
Todd Phillips's new over-hyped sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, is going to end up as a big box office disaster and stands to lose between $150 million to $200 million during the theatrical.
With stars like Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, it could never have been that movie its predecessor was, yet it disappointedly opens on the weekend and does little else afterwards.
The original Joker of 2019 is a total thriller. It has earned over $1 billion in the globe. Phoenix also won an Academy Award for Best Actor, bringing another thematic influence to be culturally bred. Critics were mixed on the film, where some praised its performance and visual dexterity, while others would criticize the narrative and pace in it.
There are many reasons Joker: Folie à Deux has not done well, and one of them is it carries an R-rating. So, it does not reach its target audience. The date with which the sequel has released in theatres was pretty crowded as not only Joker: Folie à Deux but also Barbie and Oppenheimer were waiting to unfurl. This big competition must have affected the box-office collection for Joker: Folie à Deux.
This problem may even extend to the movie's marketing campaign. Visually attractive as the trailers and posters were, they did not necessarily capture the tone and story of the movie. Critics would argue that the marketing was very centered on the Joker and Harley Quinn as a couple, while the film's greater themes were not so well foregrounded.
Despised at the box office, Joker: Folie à Deux will likely do just fine on home video and streaming. The film hails from a strong cast and looks notably unlike anything else, which will make it a possible rental and streaming winner. Still, the failure at theaters is a body blow to Warner Bros., which had much hope for the sequel.
The future of DC Comics movies- is up for discussion post the box office numbers of Joker: Folie à Deux. While the former, Joker, was a critical and commercial success, the sequel fails to create the same momentum. Only time will tell if Warner Bros. continues investing in standalone DC films or returns to a more interconnected cinematic universe.
Putting it all together, Joker: Folie à Deux is going to be an absolute box office bomb. For Warner Bros, this is just one of the weaknesses of the movie, which may serve everybody with more reason to be skeptical towards further DC Comics films. Even though the sequel still would go pretty decently with home video and streaming, its failure at theaters is an extremely loud reminder that while making blockbuster films without fail and successfully has its own share of troubles.
