John Ashton, Known for His Role as Taggart in 'Beverly Hills Cop' Films, Dies at 76
John Ashton, the beloved actor known for his role as Detective John Taggart in the Beverly Hills Cop film series, has passed away at the age of 76. Ashton died peacefully on September 26 in Colorado, according to a statement provided to USA Today. No cause of death has been disclosed.
Ashton gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Taggart, the no-nonsense cop opposite Eddie Murphy’s Axel Foley in the original 1984 Beverly Hills Cop and its 1987 sequel, Beverly Hills Cop II. After a lengthy absence from the franchise, Ashton returned for the Netflix follow-up, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, released earlier this year. His performance, alongside the original cast, was a much-anticipated reunion that brought back the magic of the first two films.
Eddie Murphy praised Ashton and the original ensemble for helping shape the legacy of the series, acknowledging that the absence of key cast members, including Ashton, was one of the reasons Beverly Hills Cop III lacked the same energy. “Now, we’re back with John back as Taggart,” Murphy remarked earlier this year, emphasizing how critical Ashton was to the dynamic that made the earlier films a success.
Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, and raised in Enfield, Connecticut, Ashton studied theater arts at the University of Southern California before embarking on his acting career in the 1970s. Beyond Beverly Hills Cop, Ashton was known for his role in the 1988 action-comedy Midnight Run, where he starred alongside Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin as rival bounty hunter Marvin Dorfler. His filmography also included Some Kind of Wonderful (1987), She’s Having a Baby (1988), and Gone Baby Gone (2007).
Ashton made numerous appearances on television throughout his career, including guest spots on iconic shows like MASH*, Columbo, The A-Team, The Twilight Zone, and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. His versatility as an actor allowed him to shift seamlessly between action, drama, and comedy, making him a memorable presence across genres.
In his personal life, Ashton was remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother. His family expressed their deep loss, saying his “memory will forever be treasured.”
Ashton’s return to the Beverly Hills Cop franchise earlier this year brought him full circle with co-stars Eddie Murphy and Judge Reinhold. Reflecting on his return, Ashton described the experience as “surreal” and emotionally meaningful, especially when the crew expressed how special it was to see the original trio reunited on set.
John Ashton leaves behind a legacy of memorable performances, cherished by fans and colleagues alike, and his contributions to the entertainment world will not be forgotten.
